Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia (AML)

Acute Myelogenous Leukaemia (AML), also known as Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, is a type of Leukaemia that starts from young white blood cells called granulocytes or monocytes or myelocytes in the bone marrow, where the new blood cells are made. AML causes the body to make too many myelocytes very quickly. These abnormal cells are not able to work properly. They build up in the blood and bone marrow and eventually spread to other parts of the body including the lymph nodes and the spleen. This buildup of myelocytes in the blood results in infections, feeling of tiredness & breathlessness (anaemic) and easy bleeding. AML is more common in men than in women and it also affects children. .
