What is a Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT)?
The Bone Marrow is a soft, gelatinous tissue found inside some of the bones (hip & thigh), and this is where the body makes and stores blood-forming cells called stem cells. These stem cells then turn into various types of blood cells: White Blood Cells that help fight infections, Red Blood Cells that carry oxygen throughout the body and Platelets that help control bleeding.
A BMT, also referred to as a Stem Cell Transplant, is a procedure that is used to treat conditions in which the bone marrow is damaged and is no longer able to produce healthy blood cells. It is also carried out to replace blood cells that get damaged or destroyed because of intensive cancer treatment.
