When it comes to treatment of a blood cancer or a blood disorder, the Haematologist needs to consider several factors including the following:
- The type of blood cancer
- The subtype of the disease, phase, category and/ or stage
- The patient’s overall health
- The symptoms
- The location of the cancer cells
- The rate of disease progression
- Whether the patient has had blood cancer or any other cancer in the past
- Whether the cancer is in the patient’s central nervous system
- Whether there is an infection in the bloodstream
- Whether the patient is pregnant
- The effect treatment may have on the quality of life.
After considering the above factors, the Haematologist or Haemato-Oncologist will recommend one or more of the following treatments:
